Understand yourself
The brain’s main job is to keep you safe. When a major incident happens, your brain will quickly react. You may:
- Run away.
- Try to defend yourself.
- Stay very quiet and still.

People of all ages sometimes feel a very strong sense of happiness, called elation, because they survived an incident.
Sometimes you can feel…
- Confused.
- Foggy in the head.
- Like your legs are made of jelly.
- An awful feeling in your chest or stomach.
All of these are normal
It can take a bit of time for your brain to figure out what has happened to you.
You might want to stay close to your family and friends now, because being alone can bring back feelings and memories of being on your own when the incident happened.
This is normal too.
