What is a mental health problem

We all go through difficult times when we feel anxious, angry or sad. Usually this doesn’t last long, and we get back to feeling more like ourselves quite quickly. But for some young people, these feelings continue and begin to have a negative impact on their day to day lives.
One in ten young people experience emotional difficulties.
'These difficulties are often called mental health problems. When these happen, It's important to get help early as this can help to prevent difficulties from getting more serious.'

Mental health problems can be difficult to describe because there are many different feelings involved that affect people in lots of different ways. There are some things that they have in common though:
- They can affect thoughts and feelings.
- They can bother you in day-to-day life.
- These feelings can sometimes go on for a long period of time.
- They can cause distress.
All of these problems can interfere with school life, friendships and relationships at home.
