Summary

Course summary

The main aim of this course has been to raise awareness of what delirium is and to help people to deal with it. We hope that you now have:

  1. An awareness of what delirium is. We defined delirium as an neuropsychiatric condition resulting in acute problems with attention, arousal and cognition for which there is normally an underlying cause.
  2. Explored why we need to know about delirium. We explained that delirium is common, it often goes unrecognised, it can lead to serious complications but can also be prevented.
  3. Considered the causes and signs of delirium. We explored the different causes of delirium, identified groups more at risk of developing delirium, provided real-life clinical examples and suggested signs to look for as well as prompting the use of the single question in delirium “have they been more confused lately?”
  4. Identified ways you can help someone to deal with delirium. We explained that if you think someone may have delirium you should let a healthcare professional know, whether that is their GP or healthcare team if they are in hospital. We also considered the different ways you can support someone to make the situation more comfortable for them while they wait for treatment.
  5. Further information and resources that you can refer to about delirium. We provided a list of places where you can get reliable information about delirium and some free resources that you can use to raise awareness about delirium.
