What is Qi-gong?
Qi-gong, a form of exercise rooted in Chinese tradition, consists of gentle, repetitive movements that promote increased fluid movement in the body and heighten awareness of how the body interacts with its surroundings. It encompasses both external movements and internal movements, known as neigong or ‘internal power,’ which contribute to its effectiveness as a health and wellness practice.
Unlike many Western exercise forms that focus on intense cardiovascular workouts or weight training, Qi-gong emphasises a more holistic approach to physical wellbeing. By incorporating internal neigong movements, Qi-gong addresses not only the external aspects of movement but also cultivates inner tranquillity, balance, and harmony. This focus on the internal aspects sets Qi-gong apart from other exercises and contributes to its unique benefits.

The practice of Qi-gong recognises the interconnectedness of physical and mental wellbeing. It acknowledges that many physical ailments can be influenced or exacerbated by mental or emotional stress. Qi-gong provides a means to manage and alleviate these stressors by fostering inner tranquillity, regulating and balancing the flow of Qi (energy) within the body. Through regular practice, Qi-gong cultivates a sense of calm, eases anger and depression, and helps bring clarity to one’s thoughts and emotions.
The development of inner tranquillity through Qi-gong is of great significance. By strengthening and balancing the energy of the mind, you may enhance your ability to perceive subtle nuances, to observe and understand the patterns of the world with increasing levels of complexity. This heightened awareness and perceptual acuity can lead to insights and a deeper connection to oneself and the environment. It is through the practice of Qi-gong and the cultivation of energy that individuals may access these abilities and experiences.
There are many videos available online about Qi-gong, including introductions to Qi-gong and beginner Qi-gong.
It is important to note that if you have specific health concerns, seeking advice from a healthcare professional before engaging in Qi- gong practice is recommended. While Qi-gong offers numerous benefits for overall wellbeing, individual circumstances may require customised guidance to ensure safe and appropriate practice.
