This resource is for parents and carers of children and young people who have a diagnosis of autism. Parents and carers of a child or young person on the waiting list for an autism assessment might also find it helpful.

It is designed to be an updated and improved online version of the previous Brief ASCEND course. This was being delivered through three half day face-to-face sessions prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Important:

We are aware that the language in this course needs updating and are working on this behind the scenes. We have chosen for this course to remain on our website during this time as we recognise that many people find the course helpful.

The language in this course uses the National Autistic Society guidance on how to talk and write about autism. We know that each individual has their own preference on how they wish to be described. Some content is at the persons discretion in personal experience quotes, linked embedded content and graphs, pictures, book titles. As such, you should always take this into account and respect and value their preferences.

You can find Guidance on the National Autistic Society Website – National Autistic Society (opens in a new tab)

This ADAPT resource has been co-produced with York CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) and CYC (City of York Council) Specialist Teaching Team for Autism in York.

There are 19 sections which will take about 2 to 3 hours to complete. This timing will depend on how fast you read, if you watch the videos, and how long you spend on any questions.

You do not need to complete the whole resource in one go. If you leave and come back later or another day, it will remember where you got up to.
