The CHIME factors

Research shows that there are five important things that human beings need to have a sense of positive wellbeing.

We call these five things CHIME factors:

  • Connectedness: “A sense of belonging and feeling connected to people, places, pets, hobbies, nature, spirituality, etc.”
  • Hope: “A vision or belief in the future being different than it is now, a life worth living, an individually fulfilling life.”
  • Identity: “Being more than the problems that you face. It’s being a friend, daughter or son, a poet, an athlete. That which makes us unique and different.”
  • Meaning: “Having a sense of what you want in life, what’s important and what motivates you. A sense of direction or goals, however big or small, to work towards. A reason to keep doing what you are doing.”
  • Empowerment: “Developing a strong sense of self. The belief that we have options and the ability to make informed choices for ourselves.”
