About the course

This course is specifically designed for all parents and families of children and young people who have received an Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) diagnosis. It may also be helpful for carers and friends of children and young people on the autism spectrum, however, the course will refer to parents and families.

It is developed from Chris Williams and Barry Wright’s book ‘How to Live with Autism and Aspergers Syndrome: Practical strategies for Parents and Professionals’ (2003) (Book available through online book sellers) which the original ASCEND course offered by CAMHS and Specialist Teaching Team (STT) in York was based on.

Over the years it has been updated, adapted and added to, and for the current Recovery College Online resource, Carolyn Roberts (and colleagues from CYC STT for Autism) and Dr Sarah Jordan (CAMHS, Highly Specialised Clinical Psychologist) have drawn on a range of resources and many years of experience working with children on the autism spectrum to bring you this.

We sincerely hope you find it helpful and it supports you in promoting your child’s development and wellbeing.

During the writing of this course we have talked to parents, discussed it with York Inspirational Kids Director Ruth Thompson and York National Autistic Society parent representative Alison Watson who will also be supporting ADAPT to be the best, most effective online provision of information, guidance and advice that it can be for the families of autistic children and young people.
