Speech and Language Therapists work with people who have difficulties with communication, or with eating or drinking, because of their mental ill health, or learning disability. They aim to minimize the impact and maximize potential for people affected by communication, and eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties .They work as part of multi-disciplinary teams alongside people like doctors, nurses, social workers, support workers, dietitians, occupational therapists and psychologists.
In order to help minimize the impact and maximize the potential for people affected by communication or eating and drinking difficulties, Speech and language therapists can also work with carers to help them support the person they care for.
They also work with people with learning disabilities who may have physical difficulties with eating or drinking, or have difficulties communicating or being with people because of understanding, hearing difficulties or physical health issues.
